This petite pair of low garden chairs in painted cast iron dates to the French Napoléon III period, circa late 19th century. Each chair features a pierced circular seat with a radiating rosette, a scrolled foliate apron, and tapered legs terminating in leaf-shaped feet. The arched backs are richly cast with C-scrolls, oval cartouches, and a small cresting finial. Traces of old cream paint remain over a warm russet surface, creating a layered patina of paint and rust. The pair presents attractively and remains structurally sound.
These chairs reflect the Rococo Revival taste of the Second Empire, when cast iron flourished in France as a medium for jardins, orangeries, and public promenades. Although unmarked, the rocaille scrolls, acanthus details, and sunflower seat echo patterns popularized by important foundries such as Val d’Osne and Saint-Dizier, whose catalogues helped spread ornate yet practical designs across Europe.
